F.A.S.T. (Fluorescence and Staining Technologies) Malaria Stain is a fluorescent stain that revolutionizes malaria detection with features that provide a fast, clear alternative to standard Giemsa stains:

  • Malaria Staining in Minutes
  • Improved Clarity
  • Simple Training Requirements

Malaria Staining in Minutes

F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain offers unrivaled staining speed, with thin smear staining in just 1 minute and thick staining in 10 minutes. These times surpass all other alternatives on the market, including Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs)!

Improved Clarity

Malaria parasites stained with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain glow bright gold or orange against a dark background, maximizing contrast during review. Additionally, F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain produces minimal artifact staining, keeping users focused on parasites in the sample.

Simple Training Requirements

Because F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain uses the same sample preparation techniques as Giemsa stain, transitioning to F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain is easy to adopt for users familiar with Giemsa staining techniques. F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain is also fully supported by ParaWorld training resources, which provides a variety of training tools, including seminars, webinars, and bench aids, designed to assist both new and experienced users.

Usage

At what temperature should I store F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain?
F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain should be stored between 4 °C to 45 °C (39 °F to 113 °F) for maximum shelf life and effectiveness.

Can I perform thick or thin film screening with the F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain?
Yes, you can perform both thick film and thin film screening with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain. Consult your standard laboratory protocols for sample preparation. You can also refer to protocols from the US CDC or the WHO.

What kind of microscope is required to review F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain?
F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain is designed to be viewed with a fluorescence microscope capable of exciting specimens at ~400-480 nm (blue excitation light) and viewing fluorescence at wavelengths greater than 520 nm (green emission light).

I don't have a fluorescence microscope, what can I do?
Drucker Diagnostics offers a unique fluorescence microscopy solution in the ParaLens Advance, which can easily turn any light microscope into a powerful LED fluorescence microscope.

What magnification should I use, and how many fields should I view?
It is recommended that you view samples at 1000x magnification. At that magnification, you should attempt to review approximately 80-100 fields.

How do I focus my microscope on samples stained with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain?
Since WBCs and Platelets will also stain with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain, they can be used to focus the microscope. Simply use the fine focus to locate and focus on a stained WBC or platelet and then begin the examination for parasites. You can use the WBCs and platelets dispersed throughout the sample to maintain focus.

Sample Collection and Analysis

How do I know if what I'm looking at is malaria?
Malaria parasites stained with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain will exhibit yellow-gold fluorescence with morphology typical of malaria parasites. Other life stages may also be visible throughout the smear. For examples of malaria, consult the F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain user guide.

Does F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain also stain white blood cells and platelets?
Yes, white blood cells and platelets in the sample will also be stained. However, they will be distinct from parasites present in the sample, with a greenish tint and typical morphologies. Again, please consult the F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain user guide for examples.

How long does staining take?
With thin film smears, F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain prepares samples for review in just 1 minutes. With thick film smears, staining is possible in 10 minutes.

Can I quantify and speciate using F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain?
Yes, you can quantify and speciate with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain as you would with Giemsa stains.
